Common Core protest

Updated:

It's one of the most controversial subjects with parents and educators nationwide and taking front and center next week.

It's a nationwide protest against common core and is slated to take place Monday November 18.  For those in Acadiana, organizers say Girard Park in Lafayette will be their meeting place around ten o'clock in the morning. People will be rallying against the new state standards, which are supposed to raise standards but many say it's a flawed plan.

Traci Miller who helped organize the protest in Louisiana, said the writers of common core were made up of a team in the national governors association and they are not educators. So if they have the authority to write the standards for her children, then Miller says she has just as much right to oppose them.

Lafayette Parish School Superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper said this is America and people have the right to stand up for what they believe. But by doing this, it will only hurt the children because they are losing out on valuable teacher-student time.
