New Iberia Council to vote on half cent sales tax

Posted: Updated:

New Iberia City Council will be voting tonight to put a half cent sales tax on the April ballot with a quarter cent of it going towards public safety and the other quarter cent going towards public works.

Under public safety is the sheriff's office, fire department and permit department which councilwoman Natalie Robin says shouldn't be included.

"If we're going to put a tax on the ballot for public safety, I think we need to be very clear that that is fire and police operations. Not permit department." said Robin.

Earlier this year, Mayor Hilda Curry was proposing a half cent sales tax to pay for law enforcement, but it never made it onto last month's ballot.
