University of Louisiana at Lafayette's homecoming theme, "The Best Week Ever" is holding true with the annual "Paint the Town Red" contest. The results are in. The first place winner for in the "exterior" category is Lowry's Printing, Copy, and Signs. First place for "interior" is the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office.
It's a homecoming week rite of passage and the contest is a hit every year. This year's theme "Reality Shows" represents the ever growing popularity of the television genre.
Last's third place winner, Spoiled Pet Spa and Boutique, went tongue-in-cheek this year as "The Real Housepups of Lafayette".
"We have fun spoiling pups in Lafayette. I must say, we have grooming, we dress them, so it's almost like they're the Real Housepups of Lafayette," said owner Jacey Simon.
And over on Camellia Boulevard, the businesses set up in the Iberia Bank Tower joined forces for their rendition of "Top Chef"—tailgating style. With red trucks, larger than life signs and of course, food, their school spirit lights up the intersection both day and night.
"If everybody would come around at nighttime, you'll see the UL through the windows and all the signs and everything," said Gail Romero, of Van Eaton & Romero. "We're just trying to give a lot of positive energy to UL and paint the town red for their homecoming."
And as their first year entering the contest, they're hoping to stand out.
"I think it's just bragging rights basically," said Romero.
It may be the first Paint the Town Red for some folks, but for others, they consider themselves veteran champions and this year, that meant taking it to the next level.
And after 11 first place wins, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office knows how to do it right. Their "Cajun Dynasty" theme is quintessential Louisiana. They turned the first floor into a mini-football obstacle course. And with more participants this year, they're welcoming the competition.
"It's wonderful," said Mary Evans with LPSO. "For a while, it (was) getting less and less (participation), so it's good to see people participating."
