SLCC nearing deadline for new campus

Posted: Updated:

South Louisiana Community College needs land to build a new campus and they need it donated within two months.

So, time is ticking.

"We need about nine acres to build a campus," says Rudy Gonzales, vice-chancellor of administration and finance.

According to Gonzales, they need the land donation in St. Martinville by December 3.

"(We need land) that has visibility from the main highway, easily for students and allows for growth," says Gonzales.

Gonzales says the St. Martin Parish School Board donated less than four acres across the street from the existing St. Martinville campus, but it's not a fit.

"Leaders of the community said ‘you know what? We need better accessibility and you need some room to grow. You would be landlocked in that neighborhood,'" says Gonzales.

But, Gonzales says they may have to settle on that land, if they miss the deadline.

"They need to make a decision, whether to go ahead and build in the original site we were going to build on or extend the request for land," says Gonzales.

Gonzales says the school board donated the land more than a year ago to Acadiana Technical College, before their merger with SLCC.

"We started looking at all that and that's when we started looking at it and saying it didn't have all the things we really wanted in there," says Gonzales.

If you are interested in donating nine or more acres of land in St. Martinville to the college you can email Brian Lafleur at lafleur@csrsonline.com.
