James Brown has Lafayette feeling good

Posted: Updated:

‘I feel good' is how many are feeling as the Apollo Theatre's "James Brown: Get on the Good Foot, a Celebration in Dance" makes its way to Lafayette.

The 75 minute long production was launched in partnership with the city of Lafayette in March of 2013. Apollo's Executive Producer Mikki Shepard explained Lafayette was chosen for its history of innovation and spirit. James Brown performed throughout Lafayette, including the Lafayette Sports Center, Hilton Ballroom and the Blackhem Coliseum. He is also well known at the Apollo Theatre, especially for his album "Live at the Apollo."

Conceived by Artistic Director and Harlem Native Otis Sallid, this performance will shed a light on Brown's influence with his collection of music serving as background to different styles of dance.

Jackie Lyle, Lafayette Project Manager said, "It's a story. It shows his beginning as a big performer, it showed the importance of how his band looked. It's just a great night of entertainment."

Musically heart-stopping with original scores of Brown's music, the dance and costumes are colorful and include a culturally mixed cast of character

"We have a Chinese Production Manager. We have choreographers from Vietnam, South Africa and of course the United States," Lyle explained.

Philadelphia dance company , Philadanco, performs with guest dancers playing the roles of Rhythm and Magic. Dancers, choreographers, music and design teams as well as touring personnel have been in Lafayette since the second week of October, preparing the production for its premiere in New York City on October 22nd. The Performing Arts Society of Acadiana has played a big role and will present a workshop performance one night only.

"It's like a Broadway tryout that takes place outside of New York City for this show. After its tried out here on Thursday night, the world premiere will take place at the Apollo Theater," said Lyle.

The Thursday performance will be the only chance to see the production outside of the Apollo, so for those not planning to travel anytime soon, tickets can be purchased at the Heymann Performing Arts Center box office or online at ticketmaster.com
