Discipline rates descend in Carencro

Posted: Updated:

Carencro High School racked up a total of 1000 referrals in the month of September alone last school year.

"Major problems would have been disrespect towards teachers, direct confrontation with teachers, fighting and illegal substances on campus: said Johnoson Crutchfield,

Assistant Principal. During the summer, Principal Ken Roebuck met with students and teachers to view their expectations for the school year.

Roebuck says, "Once we did that our PBIS team, which is positive behavior support, determined different areas we wanted to try and improve upon and came up with action plans on how to do that."

Some of those plans include, student of the month awards as well a Bear Buck Store. Whenever you do the right thing in class or help a teacher out you get rewarded with Bear Bucks and in return you can come and get various items, said Tori Spindler, a senior at CHS.

These incentives have proven effective. The number of students with referrals this year have decreased from 1000, to 229. The kids bought into it! Because it was a their input, it was the teachers input and how they want to see our school. And so, I think those factors came together and have led to some of the success that we've had this year says Principal Roebuck.
