Authorities in Vermilion Parish made three arrests for drug related offenses due to undercover operations conducted within the parish.
Agents were working in an undercover capacity in the Vermilion Parish area when they made contact with one Fernando Ben (dob 8/21/79) of Lafayette. A conversation between Ben and an undercover operative ensued and the two agreed that Ben would sell the agent illicit narcotics. Upon doing so agents moved in and arrested Ben on charges of attempted distribution of marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a schedule IV narcotic (Alprazolam), and possession of MDMA (Ecstasy).
While working narcotics criminal patrol, agents witnessed what appeared to be a hand-to-hand drug transaction out of a vehicle. The vehicle in question left the scene and committed several traffic violations, causing agents to activate their emergency lights and attempt to stop the vehicle. Upon doing so the vehicle began to flee, and upon stopping, the driver, identified as Shanthony Bessard (dob 11/12/85) of Abbeville, fled on foot. Agents gave chase but lost him in the area. Bessard was found hiding in a local business. He was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a legend drug, and resisting arrest.
In other action agents arrested James Walter Jones Jr. (dob 8/24/88) of New Iberia was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine.
