LCG garbage service fines approved

Posted: Updated:

For property owners in Lafayette and in the unincorporated areas of Lafayette Parish, there's a new fine on the books. The Lafayette City-Parish Council Tuesday approved fines for trash carts left on the street 24 hours after being serviced. In the past, there was not a fine for that.

"I'm going to require a picture. Take a picture and send it to the property owner and notify the property owner that there's a law that prevents this. It happened on such and such a date please don't let it happen again," LCG Environmental Quality Manager Mark Pope.

Pope says the next warning could come with a fine of $25. Pope explains that the revision to the solid waste code is overdue. In fact, there are people not signed up for trash pickup; which is mandatory. Pope counts 1,200 residents are not signed up. Director of Public Works Thomas Carroll explains that the proposed revisions are the request of the public.

"These are comments we got back from council.  Comments from constituents that we need to be able to do something," explains Carroll.

A warning letter with a picture of the violation will be sent to the property owner. Pope says a fine cannot be enforced until the resident is forewarned. The maximum to levied will be $100. Councilman Jay Castille as a property owner plans to hold his tenants accountable.

"If I get hit with a 25 dollar fine, and if they don't pay me the $25 I'm going to take it out of their deposit. There are ways to take care of this"

Councilman Jared Bellard voted against the code revision. Bellard says the proposal is too strict. "In my opinion, to fine someone and put a lien on their property just for leaving a trash can is a little extreme," adds Bellard.

For those not signed up for the mandatory trash pickup service face a fine of $50 a week. The fine goes up to $200. Public Works says once notified, you'll have 30 days to sign up. If you respond in a timely manner, the fines could be dismissed.
