Shutdown affecting local agencies

Posted: Updated:

On a local level, the government shutdown has affected some services in St. Landry Parish.

Parish President Bill Fontenot says, as of Tuesday the Community Action Group, which is part of parish government but supported with federal dollars, is relying on funds left over from last fiscal year while they wait for federal money that was supposed to kick in Tuesday. That group provides an array of services including food and utility assistance to senior citizens and the poor.

President Fontenot says it's disappointing to know that our government is sending money all over the world to help people, but can't help its own in this country. The Community Action Agency has enough surplus money to keep services going for another six to eight weeks.
