Angola inmates captured after escape

ANGOLA, La. (AP) - Two Angola inmates were captured after attempting a daring plan to escape from prison.

While in the prison yard Sunday, officials say the two inmates broke through the bottom of one gate and climbed over another before taking off into a wooded area.

Warden Burl Cain tells WBRZ TV the Angola Chase Team surrounded the duo within a few hours. Cain says the two never actually left the Louisiana State Penitentiary grounds.

The escapees were identified as Melvin Johnson, a convicted rapist, and Aaron Watson, a convicted killer. Both are serving life sentences without parole.

Escape charges are pending.
