Helping Vermilion Parish thrive

Posted: Updated:

The creation of a 15 member Economic Development Board in Vermilion Parish was given the green light last week, making way for the first ever Vermilion Parish Economic  Development Department.

The department will help jump start new businesses, attract more people, and create jobs in Vermilion Parish. The economic development committee hopes having a department dedicated to being a go-to resource will help.

Vermilion Parish Police Jury Paul Bourgeois thought the creation of the department would take years but the reality is just over the past few months Bourgeois has collected over two hundred thousand dollars to fund the department over the next three years. Half of that budget will come from the police jury, while the other half will be funded by the sheriff's office, school board, and the parish's municipalities.

Bourgeois says everybody who put up money for this initiative has a say in the 15 member board. Once, one person from each entity is selected, that board will then select someone to oversee the department, who then will find ways to bring in more money into the parish.

Bourgeois says this department will play a major role in keeping our kids here. And one of the only ways we can do that is to raise the standard of living and bringing in new industry will help do that. No timeline has been given as to when each member will be selected or when they will select someone to oversee the department. All members on the board will serve a three-year term, without salary.
