PORT BARRE, La. (AP) - Authorities say a 24-year-old Port Barre man died after being struck by a car while standing near the shoulder of U.S. 190 east of Port Barre.

State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons says a vehicle driven by the victim, Jordan Arnaud, ran out of gas at 4 a.m. Sunday on the highway, prompting Arnaud to pull over to the road's shoulder and exit the vehicle.

While standing partially in the road and speaking to passengers in his vehicle, Hammons said Arnaud was struck by an eastbound car.

The St. Landry Parish Coroner's Office pronounced Arnaud dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was not injured in the crash.
