Certain flu vaccines offer extra protection

Posted: Updated:

It's that time of year again—flu season is starting and pharmacies nationwide are stocking up on vaccines. But it's slightly different this time around, as some companies are offering a shot of something extra.

This season's flu shot is available and for the first time in 30 years, there's now a vaccine to cover more than just the traditional 3 strains.

Dr. Tina Stefanski with the Office of Public Health explains, "For the first time, this year, the flu covers four strains, type A and type B."

The quadrivalent variety is available in both intra-nasal and shot form. However, not all the traditional flu shots have the fourth strain. And you better act fast if you do want the four-strain vaccine, since there's only a limited quantity and not all pharmacies carry it.

"If your provider does not have the quadrivalent, you should still get the flu shot. There's no one better product than the other," said Stefanski.

And also for the first time, an egg-free vaccine is available for those with serious egg-allergies.  Stefanski says since the height of flu season changes year-to-year, it's best to get the shot early before you see others getting sick.

"The one saying about the flu is that the one thing predictable about the flu is that it's unpredictable," said Stefanski.

Check with your health provider to see if you are healthy enough to receive the flu vaccine.
