Acadiana schools adopts new standards

Posted:

Acadiana school superintendents say the new common core educational standards will be one of the biggest challenges for students and teachers in the coming years.

Louisiana is one of 45 states that are adopting the new standards for math and English language arts. Common core elements are being integrated into more classrooms this year. Several of the superintendents pointed out, that common core sets benchmarks, but does not provide a curriculum for classroom use.

Lafayette Parish Superintendent Pat Cooper said, the idea is that, teachers can develop their own strategies for reaching those goals. Other leaders, however, said more guidelines might be useful, especially in the early days of implementation.
