Mixed Martial Arts in Acadiana

Posted: Updated:

Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, has existed overseas since the early 1900's. It made its way to the United States around 1993, and about eight years ago Lafayette joined the movement.

USA-MMA owner Gil Guillory says, "Andres Landor actually started promoting events before I did, then you have a guy like Tim Credeur that had been fighting in California and different places, finally came home and brought Brazilian Jujitsu here. It became a sensation when we all just bottled that up together an it just exploded in the area."

Across between jujitsu, boxing and karate, MMA is a pretty intense sport, but it's also beneficial to the youth in the community."

It allow us, our children to train in an art form that really stressed and utilizes the greatest aspects of human beings: competition, respect, desire, fitness, everything you can think about that you want, ideally in your child or in yourself as a person" said Guillory.

The event's title sponsor, High EndAutomotive, is a completely different industry than USA-MMA, yet, the two still have a lot in common.

Director of Business Development for HighEnd Automotive said, "They have the controlled environment as well with having the kids com in off the street and have a good time with meeting the fighters just as well as meeting the drivers at the track."

Both High End and USA-MMA focus on putting their time, knowledge and experience back into the community.

Guillory says, "Lafayette's our support area, Lafayette's our home. Everybody has been so supportive. There's been tons of businesses that have come on board and it's just phenomenal."
