Flood warnings for Iberia Parish homebuyers

Posted: Updated:

Parish Councilman Glenn Romero says it's not uncommon for first time home or property buyers in Iberia Parish to find out their real estate purchase is prone to flooding.

"You got a lot of young people getting in there and buying their first homes and they get a good price and they don't realize that it floods and I think we need to protect our young people," says Romero.

So, on Wednesday he will be introducing an amendment that will provide all buyers with a notification of a property's flood zone designation as well as any insurance and construction requirements and liabilities; before they buy it.

"They buy the land and then they go to get a permit they find out they are in a flood zone and they gotta start building up these lots and everything else and they need to find out about this before they buy the land," says Romero.

The ordinance Romero is proposing would also include houses that are not only flood prone, but have actually seen flooding. He says it would require homeowners to be upfront with planning and zoning.

"Anybody that sells a home that's flooded or in a flood zone has to report it," says Romero.
