Years in the making

Downtown Kaplan is set to get a new look, aimed at making life easier for the elderly and handicapped.

The nearly half million dollar project is phase one of the downtown beautification project. Through a state grant the city will work between Second and Third streets along Cushing avenue. That money makes it possible for re-stripping, adding more green space and tools to help slow down traffic. It also entails, repairing sidewalks, creating a more elderly and handicapped accessible downtown.

Currently, the sidewalks have no slope for handicap accessibility and the surface between the sidewalk and street, in some spots, is over a foot high. According to Mayor Kirk Champagne Kaplan has more of an elderly population and city officials want them to have an easier time getting up, onto sidewalks.

Champagne also wants people to park their cars and walk around, window shop, and to enjoy what Kaplan has to offer. Phase one of this multi phased project is expected to being next year.
