The city of Kaplan is due for a new sewer pumping station after several backups created quite a mess.

According to Mayor Kirk Champagne, one of their pumping stations pumps about half the city's sewerage. But over recent years that station has failed and can't keep up with demand. The city was awarded a $645,000 grant to help cover the cost of building a new station. The city will put in $140,000.

With no increase in rates, the biggest headaches people will experience are detours. Mayor Champagne says the project will take about a year to complete. But over that year people will need to be patient because they will have to tear up some roads and also close streets.

But Champagne says this is a project that has to be done and the city has no choice in the matter if they want to attract new people to live in Kaplan. Construction is expected to begin in January.
