Resolution proposes consolidating services - KLFY News 10

Resolution proposes consolidating services

Posted: Updated:

Is Iberia Parish one step closer to consolidation? At Wednesday's Iberia Parish's Council meeting a resolution will be brought to the floor requesting the city of New Iberia consolidate three of its departments with the parish.

Parish Council member David Ditch will once again try to propose consolidation, but unlike last year when he was on the New Iberia City Council, he's only looking at three departments. A year after having his city council resolution rejected he says he still believes a full consolidation is the best thing for the parish.

"We are having a lot of duplications in not only services but department heads that frankly in my opinion are a waste of money." said Ditch.

No one on the New Iberia City Council has created any such resolution this year or has one been rejected. But New Iberia Mayor Hilda Curry says she's still opposed.

"I'm concerned that if we consolidate with the parish that our services in the city would not be as effective as they are today. In addition to the fact that it may cost our citizens more." said Curry.

And Lafayette City-Parish Government President Joey Durel says consolidating and cutting out redundancies may not save the parish money in the long run. Because consolidated services doesn't mean consolidated finances.

"All those things did save some money, but some of the inefficiencies cost us more money than the efficiencies." said Durel.

Council Member Ditch says he we would like to see the question of full consolidation on the November ballot, but says there are some timing issues in getting it on.
