Two schools receive "academically unacceptable" ratings

Posted: Updated:

Two Lafayette Parish Schools have been deemed Academically Unacceptable. According to the Department of Education's preliminary calculations, Alice Boucher and J.W. Faulk Elementary scored unacceptable on the LEAP and ILEAP exams.

Families with children attending Academically Unacceptable Schools are allowed to transfer their children to another public school. Alice Boucher missed being removed from unacceptable status with a score of 49.2.  J.W. Faulk elementary scored 34.4. Schools must score at least a 50 to be removed from unacceptable.

"Those parents that want to take advantage of the Choice Program for Alice Boucher and JW Faulk can either go to Carencro Heights, Ossun or Prairie Elementary," explains Superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper.

Dr. Cooper says productive changes have taken place at both schools. The refocus will be on reading, writing and arithmetic; while enhancing the Pre-K programs.

"We got a good faculty there. We got a good staff.  I think what they needed was a leader. So we appointed Annette Samec; a veteran principal to come into Alice Boucher and lead that school," says Dr. Cooper.

Dr. Cooper says that the principal at J.W. Faulk is in her second year. The superintendent adds that the school has stability in terms of staffing.  He says that will make a difference. "Parents can choose to move their children out of an AUS, but they don't have to.  I encourage them to stay, because I think the things that are going on at those schools are going to be really good," says the superintendent.

According to a LPSS news release, the district will provide transportation to the receiving schools until Alice Boucher and Faulk are no longer labeled Academically Unacceptable. Parents have until August 12 to decide if they want to  exercise this option.
