New school year, new faces

Posted: Updated:

With the start of school just around the corner, many institutions will see changes take effect. At Iberia Middle School many of those changes will come from the main office.

According to their newly appointed principal Gleacia Morales, returning students will see almost a dozen new teachers in the classrooms. Morales said having new teachers come in is a great thing for the school because they bring fresh, new and different ideas.

Principal Morales is no stranger to Iberia Middle. She was the assistant principal there for the past four years. Morales got her start in Jefferson Parish where she taught middle school and high school science and now she is the Principal at Iberia Middle. As many new faces start, a lot of changes will be taught in the classroom.

According to Morales this will be the first year full implementation of the common core curriculum will be in place. Morales said a lot more expectations will be placed on students than in years past because this new curriculum is geared more toward a college preparatory curriculum.

Just as new things take effect, old ways of teaching will be phased out. Principal Morales said this will be the last year for LEAP testing. After this year, PARCC testing will take effect. That testing goes along with common core curriculum and will start beginning next year.

Schools throughout Iberia Parish start next Friday, August 9th .
