Group helps seniors stay cool this summer

Posted: Updated:

There's a new crew in town reaching out to senior citizens to keep them educated and during these brutal summer days. Summer heat can be much more than simply unpleasant, for seniors, who are more likely to fall victim to heat strokes, it can be deadly.

"Emeritus is assisted living for seniors and also we provide three meals, we take them on activities, we take them to their doctor visits, it's their home and they love it here. said Executive Director at Emeritus, Kathie Zimmerman.

In addition to their daily routine, the staff also does work in the communities nationwide, with a program known as "The Shade Brigade."

Emeritus staff goes out locally to serve seniors and we give them the resources that they need in order to stay cool for the summer and to recognize signs of heatstroke and dehydration.

Dehydration is among the top reasons seniors are hospitalized, so The Shade Brigade travels out to their homes and bring things like bottles of water, sunscreen, Chapstick, popsicles, fruit, different things just to make sure that seniors have what they need in order to stay safe and cool this summer.
