Paving way for smoother ride

Posted: Updated:

A first of its kind sales tax proposal in St. Landry Parish could pave the way for a smoother ride.

For decades, roads throughout that parish have been neglected. Approximately 700 miles of rural roads are in need of repair but with limited funding they get patched up time and time again.

That's why parish president Bill Fontenot is proposing a dedicated two cent sales tax for those living in the unincorporated areas. The tax would increase the current unincorporated sales tax from 7.55% to 9.55%.

According to Parish president Bill Fontenot this is a referendum that is totally in hands of the people. This will be the law and cannot be changed by any council or president once it's imposed. It will be only used to improve roads, bridges and related drainage to roads.

Only registered voters in rural St. Landry Parish will vote on this proposal during the upcoming election on October 19th. If you would like a pamphlet on the proposed sales tax you can reach out to the Saint Landry Parish Government office.
