Lafayette man dies following police shooting

Posted: Updated:

State police are investigating what led to a Lafayette police officer fatally shooting a man in a neighborhood Sunday night. The incident happened at a house near the intersection of Halcott Drive and Chateau Place. The neighborhood is located just off of Camellia Boulevard.

"I came out of my house and police were going down the street at a high rate of speed. When they got to the corner they opened up their trunks took guns out and were running down the to the right. After two of three minutes I heard what sounded like one gun shot." said a person who wanted to remain anonymous.

Authorities say Lafayette police were responding to a possible attempted suicide on Chateau Place. That's when they came to the residence of the man and found him armed with a handgun and fatally shot him.

Scott Jones lives one block away and also he says he heard multiple shots fired after seeing police rushing to the house.

"I went outside to see if I could see what was going on. Three cop cars whizzing by and just started stopping traffic and made sure nobody else went down there and heard gunshots and figured it wasn't safe." said Jones.

Benny Bexley lives on Chateau Place and says paramedics stepped inside the house tapped off by police, but says they came out alone. The whole situation he says is uncharacteristic for Chateau Place.

"Very little traffic comes through here. You don't get a lot of through traffic at all. It's a very safe neighborhood." said Bexley.

Authorities identified the man as 34-year-old Harold J. Bastin of Lafayette. They say he engaged the officers before being fatally shot.
