More school districts joining co-op

Posted: Updated:

It's a money savings trend that began in Vermilion Parish and is now being used statewide.

Just six months ago the District Cooperative of Louisiana was established by Vermilion Parish School Superintendent Jerome Puyau. The co-op negotiates a discounted price on school supplies with private companies. And with multiple districts needing the same supplies, the co-op buys more, receiving the best group rate and saving thousands of dollars.

Their initial goal was to sign 16 school districts; they are now at 45. Superintendent Puyau says every dollar matters and how far we can stretch that dollar makes a big difference.

Puyau goes on to say if we are saving money, we can re-invest that money into our future and buy more products for our school systems and make them more successful. Superintendent Puyau hopes to have all 68 school districts in the state sign into the co-op.
