Posted: Updated:

Rice leaders from around the nation met at the LSU AgCenter research station in Crowley for their 104th annual rice field day.

The event gave the AgCenter the chance to showcase their research while updating local growers on what the future of the industry looks like. Types of research being worked on at the facility include variety development, plant protection, harvesting efficiency and production practices. The information obtained from scientist there is sought and implemented by farmers' worldwide.

According to B. Rogers Leonard with the AgCenter, this particular facility is one of the premier research stations not only in Louisiana but across the entire southern region. Scientist here impact rice production across the world.

New LSU systems president, F. King Alexander, attended Wednesday's event which is a mile stone for the AgCenter because it's the first time in a long time a systems president visited during a tour seeing first-hand what is being developed.

A rice specialist at the LSU AgCenter said many farmers are still dealing with a lot of uncertainty in what variety of crop to plant for next year. But did say the long-grain conventional variety, Mermentau is a good choice, as is Catahoula.
