Lawmakers ask for more details on hospital deals

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Lawmakers combing through plans to privatize LSU's hospitals are questioning incomplete financial terms, access to hospital records and the long-term impact on the state budget and patient care.

The questions came up Thursday as the legislative budget committee reviewed the hospital contracts.

Management of the university hospitals in New Orleans, Lafayette, Houma and Lake Charles is slated to turn over to private operators next week, even though some financial details remain incomplete in the documents provided to lawmakers.

Gov. Bobby Jindal is pushing to privatize nine of the 10 LSU hospitals. Lawmakers have little authority over the contracts.

The governor's top budget adviser, Commissioner of Administration Kristy Nichols, assured lawmakers that the deals will save the state treasury money - though they are expected to use more federal financing.
