St. Mary Parish to cut 26 teachers by attrition

Posted: Updated:

CENTERVILLE, La. (AP) - St. Mary Parish Superintendent of Schools Donald Aguillard says attrition will cut the number of teachers nearly 4 percent in the coming school year.

The Daily Review reports that 17 are special education teachers in jobs affected by loss of federal money. The others are six in high school, eight in junior high and four elementary teachers.

Aguillard told a school board budget workshop on Tuesday that finances are getting tighter each year, and if more cuts are needed they could affect areas such as tutoring, school books or extended school days.

Chief Financial Officer Alton Perry said Wednesday that teacher cuts are based on attendance expected for the coming year. He said similar cuts are made in the central office, when possible, as personnel retire or leave.
