The Village of Maurice is about $20,000 richer thanks to tax money that was once tied up in the bank.
For nearly five years, residents throughout Vermilion Parish have paid a one percent tax that was once strictly dedicated to nonprofit youth recreational organizations. The only problem was, Maurice didn't have any nonprofit youth organizations and couldn't touch the money. That was until lawmakers stepped in and passed legislation allowing the money to be expended.
Village Mayor Wayne Theriot says he has some ideas of possible utilizing all of it or a big portion of it as a match for a grant so a walking path could be put around Maurice Park. Mayor Theriot says improvements to Maurice Park could also include new recreational equipment but says either plan would benefit Maurice's growing population.
The city council plans to discuss the matter during Wednesday night's city council meeting.
