BESE to consider funds for 'Course Choice' program

Posted:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The state education board is being asked to allocate $2 million for a pilot program to expand online high school course offerings to public school students.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education considers Tuesday the funding plan for the "Course Choice" program to begin in the 2013-14 school year.

Initial plans were to finance the program through the public school funding formula, but the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that unconstitutional.

Now, Superintendent of Education John White is asking BESE to pay for the program with dollars from a trust fund filled with oil and gas dollars set aside for education programs.

White expects between 2,000 and 3,000 students to enroll in the pilot program for academic courses, advanced placement classes and skills training taught by private organizations and universities.
