New Iberia Fire Station to Close

A fire station in New Iberia had to be shut-down. We're told fire station #2 was closed the last 3 days but will open again Friday. Fire Chief Ronnie Bourque tells KLFY that it was closed due to staffing issues but will open Saturday at 7:00am.

Council woman Natalie Lopez-Robin learned about the closure Wednesday. To her understanding there's not enough staff to man the station while vacations are being taken. Weeks Street is in the district of Councilman Raymond Lewis. Lewis is upset that he wasn't told about the closure.

He says he heard about it from people other than city administration. Lewis also claims there's a budget for staffing - but the hiring is not getting done. Robin admits she would have appreciated knowing about the closure. But says city administration isn't obligated to tell the council about day to day decision making.

"This side could possibly be in trouble because we have a one mile and a half away from this location that has to service the Southside of the tracks. This is blatantly irresponsible; people being irresponsible" says Lewis.

"When it comes to the bottom line we're just short people and we need to hire 3 or 4 more people that way when things like this happen we don't have to shut the station down" says Robin.
