It's a project that is now eight years in the making. The St. Landry Parish Veterans Memorial Park. After seven years of battles, the property was finally donated and construction began.
The bronze statue of a kneeling soldier in a World War II uniform was erected the Friday before Memorial Day, but for now stays well protected under a white sheet.
He wont be fully revealed until the entire project is finished. Committee members are hoping this happens in 2014. Right now, the park is mainly dirt and grass, but soon a parking lot and engraved bricks will fill the area surrounding the memorial
Over 2,100 bricks will be laid on the walkway of remembrance in honor of veterans and an additional thousand bricks will be laid on both sides of the memorial for those community members who helped.
Although an eerie thought, there are prepared to make room for more wars and more veterans. And at the end of the day, committee members wish the Memorial Park to be a place of peace before, during and after times of war.
