Lafayette Chamber proposes plan to balance power on LCG Council

Posted: Updated:

The Lafayette Chamber of Commerce is proposing a plan, they say would balance power on the Lafayette City-Parish council.

Some council members feel the Fair and Focused plan is simply a back door attempt at deconsolidation.

Two years ago Lafayette parish voters were asked if deconsolidation was the answer moving forward. The response was overwhelmingly no.

Bruce Conque served on the Lafayette parish charter commission several years ago when the group was tasked to flesh out and propose a plan for deconsolidation in Lafayette. An idea that ultimately was shot down by residents.

"Nothing was done post election so the chamber took the initiative about 8 months ago to form a small group of individuals," says Bruce Conque with the Chamber of Commerce.

The fair and focused plan is the product of Conque and two other former charter commission members. For them the idea is simple, create five districts in the city limits comprised of 100 percent of the city's population.

"Would vote on city of Lafayette issues only and then they would be a part of a longer council that would address the parish issues," explains Conque.

City-Parish council chairman Brandon Shelvin, was a big supporter of deconsolidation. He likes the new plan especially when it comes to services like public safety and utilities which only affect those inside Lafayette.

"Those three departments represent and cater and affect 100 percent of the city of Lafayette," says Shelvin.

However not all council members are on board, and think it's a pointless measure. Take Jared Bellard's situation. He lives in Lafayette however a majority of his constituents are in an unincorporated area of the parish.

"It's very fair and balanced on both ends and I really don't think no one is ever gonna have intent to hurt or harm the city or parish," says Bellard.

Bellard feels this is a lighter version of deconsolidation, but Conque is quick to refute the association with the Fair and Focused plan.

"We have more people who live outside the city of Lafayette who have representation on a city-parish council that tells the city of Lafayette residents how to spend and how to govern their municipality," says Conque.
