Saturday was the official start of the 2013 hurricane season which weather experts are predicting to be more active than normal.
Forecasters are predicting we could see as many as 20 named storms which could spawn seven to 11 hurricanes. They think six of those could possibly become major hurricanes. Historically one of the hardest hit areas of Acadiana is Vermilion Parish the cause is largely due to storm surge.
Erath town council member John Leblanc says their biggest concern is storm surge from waterways like the Bayou Tigre. But he says the town is ready to evacuate residents on short notice.
