A new marina at the Port of Delcambre is getting a lot of credit for cleaning up the area and increasing business for local fishermen.

The marina opened last year as part of an expansion project for the area and recreational boaters have already rented out all available slots. The focus of such expansions is to improve the ports appeals to recreational boaters in addition to fisherman.

Also to draw more business for the local fishing industry. This marketing effort began in 2010 and is expected to continue to grow. Port Director Wendell Verret says Hurricanes Rita and Ike prompted the refurbishing.

"The issue we saw was here at this dock was once a shrimp boat dock and where we're standing was a fuel dock and that had fallen into disarray and wasn't being used. And we say that as an asset and tried to turn it into something that would spark new commerce here and Delcambre and that's what we did"  says Port Director Verret.

The expansion is expected to continue with the addition of a new boat launch, fishing pier, and dock where fishermen can sell directly to customers.

As another part of the Delcambre local initiatives the Delcambre farmers and seafood market was established and tomorrow is your chance to go support over 70 local vendors. The market will be held at the Delcambre Shrimp Festival grounds under the Oaks from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM and will include music, cooking demonstrations, food and shopping all from local vendors. The event is free and open to the public.
