Smoking on college campuses throughout the Bayou State could become a thing of the past if Senate Bill 36 is approved.

That bill would prohibit smoking on the grounds on all of Louisiana's post-secondary education campuses. The bill includes community colleges, LSU and Southern University campuses and the University of Louisiana system.

The bill sponsored by Sen. David Heitmeier would allow each school to create their own smoke-free policy, allowing smoking during certain events. The overall goal of this bill is to make Louisiana a healthier state.

Sen. Heitmeier said data shows a lot of men and women develop the habit even before going to college and if we can decrease smokers we are increasing the overall health of our community and state.

Senate Bill 36 has already passed the senate and without much opposition it's likely to pass the house.
