BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The state Department of Education says 35 organizations have submitted applications to start about 100 new charter schools in 19 parishes.
The Advocate reports the organizations are seeking to open their new schools in 2014, 2015 or 2016.
Twenty-two applicants want to start schools in East Baton Rouge Parish, the largest number of charter school applications in Baton Rouge since the mid-1990s, when the state first authorized charter schools.
New Orleans and Jefferson Parish tied for second most with eight organizations applying in each. New Orleans has the highest percentage of children in charter schools in the United States.
The city of Baker and Caddo Parish each had four applicants.
