LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - An off-duty Lafayette police officer has died in a motorcycle crash in Iberville Parish.

The Louisiana State Police said 45-year-old Richard "Ricky" Rees was riding a 2013 Harley Davidson on Saturday afternoon when he lost control of the bike on a sharp curve and landed in a ditch.

Rees was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 34-year-old Bridget Benoit, of Scott, was treated for injuries that police described as moderate.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation. Investigators don't suspect Rees was impaired at the time of the crash, but toxicology samples will be analyzed by the State Police's crime lab.

The crash occurred on Highway 3000, north of Interstate 10.

Rees was a lieutenant and 23-year veteran of the Lafayette Police Department.
