Moore Park  Drowning Victim Identified

Authorities say the body pulled from the pond at Moore Park Tuesday has been identified as 17-year-old Christlyn Willis of Lafayette.

Witnesses say two males went into the water and began swimming. As the two individuals were nearing the center of the pond, they both began having difficulty staying afloat.

Police say one of the males was able to get over to the bank of the pond while Willis went beneath the water and never re-surfaced. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office Marine Unit was called out to the scene and recovered the victim's body approximately two hours later.

Body found in pond at Moore Park

Lafayette police are investigating a drowning of a 17-year-old male at a pond in Moore Park.

Police were called to Moore Park around 4 p.m. Tuesday in reference to a drowning. The sheriff's marine unit along with the police department were on the scene for three hours searching for a body. Officials say the boy was with his family barbecuing and fishing when he went into the pond for a swim.

Lafayette Corporal Paul Mouton says at some point the boy called for help then went under the water and never re-surfaced. No name has not been released at this time.
