Senate rejects attempt to kill La. Science Act

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Senate has overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to repeal a 2008 law that permits public school science teachers to use supplemental materials in the classroom, a law critics say turns science into religion.

It was New Orleans Sen. Karen Carter Peterson's second unsuccessful attempt this session to get the Louisiana Science Education Act off the books.

Opponents of the law say it allows creationism to be taught in public schools. Supporters of the law say it promotes critical thinking.

Peterson's repeal bill was rejected by a Senate committee earlier this month. On Monday, she attempted to tack the repeal onto a bill by Ville Platte Sen. Eric LaFleur.

Peterson's amendment was jettisoned 5 to 32. LaFleur's bill passed.
