New Iberia inspection permit rates may see an increase

Posted: Updated:

One particular item on the agenda may raise some eyebrows Tuesday night at the New Iberia City Council Meeting. The rate for residential and commercial inspection permits could go up 100 percent.

The last time it operated in the black was in 2007, but now the Permit and Inspections Department in New Iberia is in the red. Since then, it has accumulated over $600,000 in lost revenue, which is why the inspection permit rates for new or remodeled properties could double. It's a drastic move Mayor Pro Tem Dan Doerle does not support.

"This department has lost $610,000," said Doerle. "So, my question is, why wasn't this done earlier to slowly come up on fees versus this much at one time?"

The rate for commercial inspections stands to go up 97 percent and residential up to 119 percent. To put the hike in perspective, Doerle crunched some numbers based on the fees for a 2,000 square-foot house.

"Right now, you're paying, $432 in permit fees for a new home," said Doerle. "But, right now, well, it would go up to $950."

And with such a high rate increase, Doerle worries it will hamper the overall development within the city of New Iberia.

"It makes people coming to New Iberia think, ‘man, can I afford to come here? I may move to Broussard or Youngsville'—and we don't want that. We want people here in New Iberia," said Doerle.
