National Historic Preservation Month

The month of May is known as National Historic Preservation Month.

Sunday afternoon Guests at the Saint Street Inn took a walk through the early 1900's with Ford Model A rides and tours to some of the Hub City's oldest houses courtesy of the Preservation Alliance of Lafayette.

"Were a historic preservation advocacy group and so what we set up today is tours of some of the historic homes that are on our local register" says Preservation Alliance board member Bob Carriker.

Over 60 people came to the fundraiser which supports historic restoration of places in the city continuing education of teachers and pays for the plaques seen on houses that are on the historic register. Carriker says this event is the first of its kind.

"We've done trolley tours before we've done carriage tours before but what a neat way to actually integrate historic automobiles with the historic homes really neat.""

After a short rickshaw or old time car ride from the Saint Street Inn event goers were taken to seven different historical locations throughout the Elmhurst neighborhood like the shady brook building that was built in the early 1900s.""

Carriker says the Preservation Alliance usually raises around $5,000 to $7,000 with the participation of Lafayette history buffs like Rebecca Comeaux enjoying the good weather, music, food and drinks.

"I think anyone would be so interested in coming to the homes to see them because its part of our heritage some of these houses have been here since the 1800s and they are well worth coming to see them" says Comeaux.
