Legislative session reaches its midpoint next week

Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Lawmakers reach the midpoint of their annual legislative session next week, with no bills yet reaching final passage, budget negotiations at a critical point and a series of proposals already discarded.

Proposals to ban discrimination against gay state workers, to enact term limits on statewide elected officials and to put limits on the TOPS free college tuition program are dead for the session, along with Gov. Bobby Jindal's tax plan.

Debates over expanding Louisiana's Medicaid program, loosening gun control laws and giving college systems the ability to raise tuition without legislative votes are ongoing.

Meanwhile, House lawmakers are questioning if budget disputes will be wrapped up by the session's end June 6 or if they could bleed over into a special session.
