A new safety feature is in the works at Lafayette Regional Airport that may calm your nerves when flying into the area.
The Lafayette Regional Airport sits in a position where landing aircraft, if they were to overrun the runway, may barrel straight into the surrounding highway and businesses, but a new material called EMAS or engineered material arresting system, is hoping to eliminate that risk.
"What happens is that if an aircraft were to overrun the runway, which hopefully that won't happen, it will gently slow the aircraft providing safety to the souls on the aircraft and also protect the area around" says Sherri Lebas.
The system will be put into place in the near future but a specific date has not been set.
