Several bills have been filed this session, all aimed at ending the pay disparity between men and women. Currently women in the bayou state make 69 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts.
This session there are three bills filed (HB453, SB68, and SB153), all aimed at giving equal pay to women.
Senator Edwin Murray out of New Orleans is sponsoring one of those bills (SB153), saying Louisiana needs to be on the right side of this policy.
Murray goes on to say in the past there have been several bills filed and the people who came to testify against it were mainly people from the business community. They thought equal pay would cost them too much. But Senator Murray says he can't understand how anyone could be against it, if someone is doing the same work they should get paid the same.
Next week a Senate Committee will hear the equal pay for women bills along with public testimony.
