Lafayette businessman sentenced for tax evasion

Posted: Updated:

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say 61-year-old Gary M. Scott has been sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay $362,961 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Services for unpaid taxes.

U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. Finley said Tuesday that Scott, of Lafayette, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Foote.

According to court documents, Scott earned more than $2.4 million in gross receipts between 2004 and 2009 and failed to file timely tax returns for those years. In an attempt to avoid paying his tax liability and evade assessment of future income taxes, Finley's office says Scott intentionally hid assets by cashing about $722,000 in checks at local check-cashing stores and establishing a bank account under a third party's name.

Finley says Scott's actions were a "willful violation of tax laws."
