Local farmers will soon have a new place to sell their products in Acadiana.
The Lafayette Horse Farm will host a Farmers' and Artisans' Market that will feature fresh produce, seafood, art and music. Farmers' markets are designed to bring fresh produce and other homemade goods from local rural areas to more urban communities.
City-Parish President Joey Durel says the market will benefit both citizens of Acadiana and local farmers.
"The market will give our local producers an opportunity to sell their products and for citizens to get good access to a significant farmers' market to get produce and seafood,"
Durel adds the market will also include French immersion speaking activities.
"We're hoping to have French speaking people out there, so French immersion kids can come practice their French."
Members of the Lafayette Central Park, the group formed to oversee the Horse Farm property, will be on site to gather public input so they can develop the park based on the community's overall interests.
Profits raised from the booth rentals at the market will benefit the Horse Farm.
The goal is to open the farmers' market every Saturday beginning June 1 from 8 a.m. until noon. The Horse Farm will stay open till 2 p.m.
