Lafayette Consolidated Government may soon be going after homeowners who've filed unlawful homestead exemption claims.
The City-Parish Council plans to adopt an ordinance to identify the violators. If approved, the ordinance opens the door for a program called Homestead Exemption Violation Program.
The council would enter into an agreement with the other city-parish taxing bodies to use an outside vendor to locate any erroneous claims.
According to the ordinance, the tax assessor will then levy the appropriate property taxes due to the various entities.
The contract will be with the St. Tammany Parish group, Assessure Systems. The ordinance will be introduced at the next week's council meeting.
