AG says Approval Not Needed for LSU Hospital Deals

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The attorney general's office says Gov. Bobby Jindal's plans to privatize the LSU-run public hospitals don't require legislative approval under the law.

The opinion from Attorney General Buddy Caldwell's office was released Thursday to New Orleans Rep. Jared Brossett, who asked for the legal guidance.

The Jindal administration has said it didn't intend to seek a legislative vote for the individual privatization agreements because the law doesn't require approval.

Brossett was pleased with a portion of the attorney general's office opinion that says the hospital leases must include a provision that assures the leased facilities continue to provide the same level of health care services.

Jindal is seeking to privatize all but one LSU hospital as a way to cut costs, but only one deal has been finalized.
