Senator Jonathan Perry is currently working on two bills that would affect prisoners as well as protect workers in correctional facilities.
The first is bill 108 which would restrict visitors for first degree murderers. Under this bill prisoners would only be allowed visitation rights for medical reason, legal or religious counsel. This bill has no listing of exceptions for family members or friends. However, prisoners already serving sentences for first degree murder charges would be able to see family members.
The second is bill 87 which works in redefining the parameters to protect correctional facility employees. The current bill holds that no form of human waste can be thrown at guards on duty.
The new bill would add water to this restriction. Currently any violation can result only in internal punishment but bill 87 would add the possibility of extra charges against any inmate who violates the safety of facility workers.
